I have got camping fever, people. West Texas road trip fever. Live in a van fever, even. I’m way past due for an outdoor adventure, and editing a book of camping recipes (with corresponding drool-inducing images of savory foods in cast-iron skillets over open fires) is not helping. Then along comes the preview for the new issue of Pom Pom Quarterly. Look! Oddly, I wasn’t factoring knitwear into any daydreams I may have been having, but I am now!
LEFT: These adorably slouchy Camp and Trail socks by Pom Pom’s Lydia Gluck would be a dream after a long hike into the backcountry or around a campground fire.
RIGHT: And this Flying Squirrel wrap by Michiyo (from the new Brooklyn Tweed Wool People 5 collection) would be equally perfect around camp. It’s a big rectangle shawl with anchoring armholes on two corners, which you wouldn’t always have to use. It cracks me up that the pattern is called Flying Squirrel (get it?), and that it’s defined as a “textured stole garment.”
Have I ever told you my friends Meg and Jo (mother and daughter), who taught me to knit, take camping trips together where they just camp and knit? I need to get in on that.

No, nobody should be made to go camping. It’s one of those things — either you love it or you really just shouldn’t do it.
I wish I liked it but would rather stick pins in my eyes. I could sit by the living room fire in those lovely socks instead!

Good question. I’m still mulling that one over. Forest green with a maroon stripe. Or that lovely blue of your Wabi Mitts with a dark red stripe.

Campfire Knits – those perfect things to wear, knit and enjoy out in the wilderness. I am so longing to go camping this week.
Hubby and I are leaving Saturday for a week long camping trip. Have three projects lined up to take along….only wish one of those were the Flying Squirrel!

YES to everything! i think my favorite knits are those that smell like camp fire. best tip ever, invest in a head lamp for knitting after dark (beside that fire). bliss.

That Flying Squirrel was my favorite one in the book! I love that designer’s menswear. I have a book of her accessories. I’d love to have a tiny airstream and travel to all of the National Parks. Or maybe just live in Big Sur. Knitting and camping. Is that Knamping?

Camping in West Texas sounds oh so much more glamorous than camping in England in the summer (when it’s bound to rain)…

I’ve been camping ever since I was a baby. My dad took my sister and I camping every year along the coast down to San Diego. First stop Pismo Beach, then Santa Barbara and finally San Diego. I have 3 children and we take them tent camping every year to San Elijo State Beach in Cardiff, CA. It’s very hard to get reservations but some how we always get a few nights. The campground is situated on a bluff overlooking the beach. Of course I bring my knitting!!! We drive so I get to knit for 8 hours in the car.

There is a campground (glampground) in Santa Barbara called El Capitan (http://www.elcapitancanyon.com/) it is very similar to the one mentioned above. This used to be the campground my dad would take me to when I was a little girl. Unfortunately, it was sold and made into an upscale glamping campground. The Big Sur resort looks gorgeous! I would love to stay there one day.
Big Sur is so amazing. We haven’t been down there in much too long.
It’s my favorite place on earth, I think. (Well, Paris, too.) I used to stay at Big Sur Lodge, Deetjens, Fernwood, any place with a vacancy. I need to go back there!
My thoughts exactly! I am so ready to head west (West Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah). What makes it perfect is not having to drive. I knit and read aloud much of the way with my family. I was pretty excited when I heard what the next issue of PomPom would be. I only went camping once as a girl with my grandparents, so getting to take my children each summer is very sentimental for me.
