Best of the Best of Pre-Fall 2018: Sacai's mad genius

This is actually the only collection I’ve looked at so far from Pre-Fall 2018, but I’m declaring Sacai the Best of the Best, because what could possibly outdo it? The whole thing is a nutty textile-nerd dreamscape, wherein classic suiting fabrics and buffalo checks and Nordic sweaters have cross-bred into insane hybridized garments so imaginative I wonder what the design team was smoking. While I love the idea of 4 sweaters being smashed into a single garment, I don’t necessarily love or want all of the end results — as much as I admire the vision and creativity on display. But some of it I do want. Badly. Like, I love the floor-length cable-sweater/white-cotton dress (look #31 if the links are wiggy) so much I want to renew my vows just so I can call it my wedding dress. (Definitely with the orange boots.) And I’d love to have the zip-up lopi/suit coat mashup outfit (#32) for my getaway ensemble!

I have no idea where I could ever go in look #20, but I might be trying to figure it out for the rest of my days. I mean …

  1. Not surprisingly I am a big fan of Sacai; the pieces look funky at first but are really wearable (at least I think so). The construction and understanding of how fabrics fall is just one thing to admire. I find her work quite compelling and outside of the common fray. Look #20 is pretty fantastic; I’m not sure how it’ll play in Nashville, but maybe we’re old enough not to care anymore (although at that price point, you probably care – hah!).

  2. These are wonderful pieces. The sweaters are so wearable.
Have you ever seen Ralph Lauren’s Fall 2015 Northern Lights collection? Knits, furs, dresses, jackets, and hats to die for. The photo shoot was in Finnish Lapland. I was able to snag a copy of this issue of his magazine and I keep it for inspiration. Love the style.

  3. #32 for sure. How those pants cuffs seem very adaptable, along with a “strategically effortless” placement of black lace on a sweater or shirt….

  4. I think they didn’t want to pay a dozen models, so they piled all the clothes onto one. SMART.

  5. Not in love with any of the looks but intrigued by how a designer thinks to mash up so many different garments into one. Fever dream? People-watching on a windy day? Interesting, to say the least.

  6. The double-take “wait, that’s not layered, it’s… all one thing!” is fabulous, and I love what’s going on with color in this collection. But I can’t stop puzzling over the back of the bodice on #31… stiff and suuuuuper blousey? with some kind of a low slung sash (or wait, is the bottom part of the sweater belted onto the dress?)? And an asymmetrical join between fabrics at the neckline? Or am I totally mis-seeing that?

  7. I am not on instagram but would like to share a photo for the log-along. What’s the best way to do that?
