The Fall issue of Interweave Knits is a 20th anniversary extravaganza, that looks to be chock full of very wearable, cozy knits. I’m particularly loving these three sweaters:

Lovely! Cracked me up when I saw Rawah posted. I have the LL Bean version! I bought it in 1979? Still have it. Recognized it immediately. Love this blog…great stuff!
The minute I saw Rawah, I thought “LL Bean.” My Bean sweater has been a staple in my closet since 1982 (yes, the same one). I’d love to make one, but for some reason, it makes me cringe, just a bit. Hand knit designers (rightly) get upset when their patterns are modified into RTW sweaters; are corporate giants allowed the same intellectual property? I’m guilty as the next knitter for mimic/knitting a RTW pattern, but then again, I’ve not ever published the pattern.
It’s a fair question, and one I have written in a draft post I’ve been kicking around for quite awhile, as yet unpublished, about when is it ok to copy — where is the line between inspiration and knockoff, and does it matter which is David and which is Goliath in a given situation. I think this is actually a great example of something done right, and I believe I’d be saying that even if Kate weren’t a close friend of mine and I hadn’t been privy to the creative process on this one. I feel like Kate’s design is a clear homage to the LL Bean sweater while also being a different sweater. The diagonal lice stitch predates Bean by a long shot, but I don’t think you could use it in blue-and-white (or blue-and-grey, as I actually think this is) without evoking the Bean sweater, but then those beautifully shaped raglans give it a new look, sportier than the Bean sweater. So to me it’s a modern sweater using a classic motif that also gives a big wave to a famous predecessor while being something wholly new for the handknitter. That’s my two cents.
I agree–the raglan updates the silhouette nicely, and it is more of an homage than a copy. I’d love to see this in a cranberry red with white (or gray) lice, or even a mustard…
