Someday vs. Right Away: Cables, please!

Someday vs. Right Away: Cables, please, for the love of knitting

It dawned on me the other day that I am stuck in the longest stockinette spell of my knitting life — by a looooooong shot. I looked it up: Not only have I apparently not knitted a cable since finishing my Bellows in February 2015 (!), I haven’t even knitted a textured stitch pattern since Hermaness Worsted, last Summer. There was some colorwork last Fall, with my Cowichan-ish vest and my Laurus, but that’s just fancy stockinette. I have literally knitted nothing but stockinette for over a year.

Think about that for a minute.

No wonder I’m so desperate for a cable to knit! I think there will have to be cables involved in my Top-Down Knitalong sweater. Or if not, I’m casting on something like Bronwyn, up top, immediately thereafter. But now that I know how long it’s actually been, I don’t even know if I can wait that long. The logical thing to do, for an immediate cable fix, would be to pick up my poor abandoned Seathwaite (bottom left) from October’s hatalong. (I set it aside until I could find a quiet, daylight moment to do the join round, and have yet to accomplish that.) But over the weekend I also saw Dianna’s version of Ysolda’s Inglis Mitts (bottom right) and had major nostalgia for my mitt knitting days.

  1. It’s so interesting that you have written about this because I just wrote about my latest spell of stockinette – it kind of creeps up on one :-) And it does get tedious, even if the end results are amongst the most wearable.

    • That’s the thing — I’ve been making the sweaters my closet *needs* (and one for my husband and one for my sister) which all just happen to be stockinette. But man, it gets dull!

  2. YES to Seathwaite! It has been one of my favorite hats to knit ~ I’ve done two of them this year. I love the doubled brim and the cables are lovely! I’m currently in the midst of cable heaven working on Jared Flood’s Timberline sweater. I think I’ll soon be craving some plain ol’ stockinette!

  3. I feel this. I’m trying to work cables into my top down pattern but I can’t help but think they are going to look upside down??

  4. Someday soon I need to finish off the sweater with cables that was started quite a long time ago. While the cables were fun to do, putting together the rest, set in sleeves, button bands etc has been on hold. It is back into the right away queue for this month.

  5. I love Bronwyn and thinking about what yarn I want to knit it with!! I would love to see if you come up with cables in your top-down sweater!! :)

  6. I MUST find myself a sweater with honeycomb stitch. That Bronwyn is nice…but…pullover? Cardigan? Vest? What to make…

  7. I have definitely been in a stockinette rut for a long, long time, although I did recently finish a cabled sweater for my son that was sitting almost finished for nearly 2 years. I am hoping to knit Kate’s Seathwaite hat before fall and also have plans to knit Bronwyn, but it’s definitely a “someday” sweater. Actually there are a few aran / fisherman type sweaters I very badly want to make, but I keep going back to yokes!
