First I have to say something about Bill Cunningham. When the NYTimes Breaking News Alert popped into my inbox that Mr. Cunningham had died, I let out the loudest “oh nooooooo!” But when there’s someone out there who you know has been doing what loves every single day, day in and day out, for decades — was still doing it at age 87 — and you hear that he’s gone, all you can think is we should all be so lucky. If you’ve never seen the documentary about him, do yourself a favor and watch it this weekend.

Great post as always! And OMG, isn’t Lindsay Inouye’s (aka @standardknit’s) Hinterland cardigan insanely gorgeous? I can’t wait for it either! In fact, I can’t wait for the whole Hinterland Straits collection this fall. There are so many great designers participating – I tested Shannon Cook’s (@soveryshannon) submission for the collection and it’s amazing too.
I too was saddened when Bill Cunningham’s death was announced. I had the same reaction as you. I loved his column in Sunday’s Times. I listened a few times. Hopefully, his brief recordings will be archived for future listening. I feel about him the way I felt about Elsa Klench who had a program Saturday mornings on CNN called “Style with Elsa Klench.” Everything related to design was covered: clothes, homes, decorative arts, etc. I planned my Saturday morning grocery shopping around the program. I left early and always got home by 10:00 AM to watch the program. This was in the late eighties and early nineties. The New Yorker did a feature on her. Maybe you can search for that and get a better idea of her.I know you’re younger than I and may have been a pre-teen during those years.
I was a kid who lived for Saturday mornings NOT for cartoons but for Elsa Klensch. Loved loved loved her.
Bill Cunningham is one of my heroes! I shared your “Oh no” reaction reading about his death in The New York Times. His bike, his camera, his love of life, people and fashion. He was true to himself and his passions. What a great example of living life to the fullest. So glad you’ve honored his memory. Pat

I’m so excited about Lindsay’s cardigan! I’m test knitting it right now, and it’s my first sweater I’ve ever knit! This is a great combination of Hinterland’s lovely yarn and a perfect pattern together. You’ll love it. I’m looking forward to the whole collection too!
I, too, have been a Bill Cunningham fan for years. He actually took a photo of my mother (and me – but I think it was my mother, but let’s not get into the therapy moment now) a few years ago. I don’t think it ever made the column, but it was a thrill to recognize him and be seen by him. What a great loss. I feel like the online versions pale in comparison.
