New Favorites: Summer’s last temptation

New Favorites: Summer's last temptation

Just as summer is winding down, I found myself tempted by a pile of oatmeal linen yarn on markdown at Craft South the other day, followed by an email from the Purl Bee with this Box Pleat Top sweater pattern, pictured above, which made me regret having left the yarn at the store. It’s too late for me to knit this sweet little tank for this year, but I’m putting it at the top of my list for next spring.

  1. I have beautiful navy linen in my stash but not enough for this tank, unfortunately! Don’t you wish they had released this earlier in the summer? These pleats are beautiful.

  2. Linda’s right, that little video tutorial on pleating is perfect. I don’t think I could have figured it out from the written instructions. The pleats would be cute on pockets or sleeves, too, for those of us too zaftig for a tank like that.

  3. The yarn, and that color, are stunning. And I am so glad to see Purl Bee showing photos of the garment on a real body. Really shows off the lovely shape and details of this top.

  4. I love this one. Have you noticed the Notched Hem Tank as well?? I thought of your aesthetic when it first turned up. I have knit one and am obsessed with it, and I am having visions of one with 3/4 length sleeves…. Although I will be doing some mods on the neckline. It is super narrow when knit as written, a little trendy for my broad shoulders. :)

  5. Yes! I saw this pattern and felt like it was made for me. What’s more is that I’m currently in Sweden (origin of the recommended yarn), but will travel to Australia (hello summer) soon. It must be meant to be!

  6. I got that same email and immediately printed the pattern. Not being one to wait until next year, I started plotting how to add some sleeves… or make the neck a bit more open so I could wear it over a turtleneck. LOVE the relaxedness of it.

  7. Am heading down under for a southern hemisphere summer too! – definitely on the to-do list right now!!

  8. I like the idea of pleats, but I think this particular top would be extremely unflattering to anyone larger than an A cup. I even think it makes the model look much rounder than she is. I’d love to be wrong on this one; I’d need to see it on more people who are not pregnant or something.

    • That’s exactly what I thought — it’s gorgeous, but if you have a chest at all, I think it’d look like a maternity top.

  9. If you move at all while wearing this it will billow in a most unflattering way over the “girls” and indeed anyone with any curves at all will not be cast in their best light in the linen summer top with box pleats … they are lovely indeed yet quite wrongly placed … too much knitting of a lovely yarn on very small needles to be disappointed later … #next … so many other lovelies to be found!
