WIP of the Week winner, week 1

WIP of the Week, week 1 — #fringeandfriendsknitalong

So like I said earlier, it has been immensely fun to see all of the sweaters getting started for the #fringeandfriendsknitalong, and just like with that whole Rhinebeck sweater idea, I totally underestimated how hard it would be to pick a favorite project! But it’s time to announce the winner of this week’s prize, which is a $150 gift certificate to none other than Fringe Supply Co.*

There were so many great contenders — please keep ’em coming! — but when I closed my eyes and asked myself which one stood out in this whole warm-up phase, it was @dxlcarson’s side-by-side sleeves photo. In describing this challenge on the knitalong page, I said, “What I’ll be looking for is beautiful/funny/interesting/informative pics …” and I would put this one under the informative header. Linda is knitting Amanda (which is not a requirement!) and had embarked on a second sleeve-swatch, changing both her cast-on and needle size, and I just loved seeing them together and how different they are. Plus it looks amazing in this camel colored Madelinetosh. Can’t wait to see the rest of the sweater.

*Full disclosure: the winner of this week’s prize happens to be a Fringe Supply Co customer, but everyone participating in this knitalong is a Fringe reader and just about everyone is also a customer (thank you!), so there’s really no way around that.   1. Nice work! I thought at first it was two sleeves being knit at once on one long circular. Which I think is the smart way to go for this kind of project.

  3. What I love about this photo (besides the beautiful lay-out and style) is what I love about this KAL and Karen’s blog in particular: it is all making me more mindful of my knitting. I am often so quick to react to a yarn, a color, or a pattern, and am thus prone to just throwing myself into a project without spending the time at the beginning to really think things through, like gauge, fabric, etc. My swatching practice, for example, has been to do less than the minimum, maybe a couple of inches, because I am anxious to move on to the process of knitting the project. It’s no wonder that the idea of making a sweater like Amanda is so daunting to me.

    Thanks to you all, my recent “ah-ha” moment is that playing with the swatch, the fabric, and yes, even the math, can be just as satisfying as the actual knitting. Amanda may be a “someday” project for me, but I am now inspired to take on a sweater pattern that is more challenging than my previous “safe” choices. Thanks!

  4. This is a great idea – two sleeves at a time – but also the idea of swatching side by side to see the difference in fabric. Motivates me to move away from the tv (this requires more concentration than my more recent projects) and make more progress on my own sweater. Congrats to Linda on a beautiful start!

    This weekends Wall Street Journal said the trend on the runway was fringe. It made me think of Karen.
