I’m over the moon for the look of Jemma Baines’ oversized black cabled beanie and want to knit it immediately — because it’s adorable and because what’s more fun to knit than cables? I’d go with Eveli Kaur’s Bulky Hat pattern (free), knit in Blue Sky Alpacas’ Bulky Alpaca Naturals yarn in Black Bear, pictured above. Lengthen the ribbing a little bit, and add a pompom at your discretion. For a slightly bulkier hat with a little more complex cabling, try Stephanie Pearl-McPhee’s An Unoriginal Hat knit in Cascade Magnum in Black.
See Vanessa Jackman’s post for the rest of Jemma’s outfit.
(Note to beginners: If you haven’t knit cables before, Kaur’s pattern would be a fantastic place to start. You’ll die when you realize how simple a basic cable is.)

Can you make suggestions about that vest-thingy she’s wearing? I’m over the moon for THAT!
I wonder what happens if you try to shear loop stitch …
I have to try SOMETHING with that loop stitch!
Oh no! Stop distracting me!!
Now I am seriously considering starting this hat…tonight. I have been wanting a bulky hat for ages, but couldn’t find a pattern I liked. This is PERFECT.
At least I can feel self-righteous for stash busting, no?
Yes!
Karen, Kayla (YarnBearer) has a free pattern you might dig. I just started on it and really love it. http://yarnbearer.wordpress.com/2013/02/11/freyr-a-free-pattern/
You guys, I wound up knitting this last night. Right after I finished the post, I headed to my monthly gathering of creative ladies making stuff. I don’t have anything on the needles right now that doesn’t require pretty close attention. And I was a little worried about this pattern — being of the slightly crude free pattern variety. There was some Blue Sky Bulky in my stash (camel colored), so I grabbed it and off I went. By the end of the three hour event (socializing all the while) it was done, and it’s cute!
I’ll snap a pic later …
I’ve never met a cable I didn’t like…this hat is no exception!
Here’s mine on Ravelry. Great hat.
